Latest Research:
The most recent information I found came from the Old West Magazine, Summer 1976. The story was written by Florence Short Self, niece of Luke and daughter of Josiah (Joe) Washington Short Jr. In the article Florence indicated that her dad was born 1851 in Mississippi and that a year later the family moved to Arkansas. It has been written that Luke was born in Mississippi, Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas. I believe he was born in Arkansas as indicated by the 1860 Federal Census.
The article names all 10 children and gives a little information on each. It also mentions the Brumley family and the killing of Dan and Will plus John. There are photos of Joe jr, George and Henry.
My local library is working to get additional information from the Library of Congress or some other source which I hope to have after the holidays
From the Graham Leader, Feb. 12, 1887
Fort Worth. Jim Courtright was killed in front of the White Elephant Saloon by Luke Short, a gambler. Short is in jail as is Charles Bull, said to have been in on a scheme with Courtright to murder short. It seems that Courtright was usinig his detective agency to squeeze money from Short and other gamblers. Short refused to pay so they met to discuss the situation and Short thought things had been settled when Courtright pulled his gun. According to witnesses, Short shot in self defense.
